The Caves of  Perigord

The Washington Post
What a great idea for a novel: Somebody turns up with a fragment of a superb prehistoric cave painting – and it comes from no known cave. Somewhere in the neighborhood of Lascaux and Les Eyzies in southwestern France there is an undiscovered cave covered with matchless art…. I sort of wish Walker hadn't finally destroyed his cave, because now I want to see it myself.

Booklist
There is something for everyone here-war stories, political intrigue, a budding affair between Lydia and Manners, and a Clan of the Cave Bear-like depiction of prehistoric life. The power struggles and dramas of each era come vividly to life in this epic read.

Dominique Lapierre, co-author of Is Paris Burning?
The heroic struggle of the French Resistance against the Nazis during the Second World War is little known. This book is the most poetic and accurate account of those tragic times I have read.

America Reborn

The Washington Post
A dazzling prose stylist having fun with his craft – an uplifting way to think about our recent history…every chapter boasts wise, original insights rendered in glowing prose.

The New York Times
A readable and thoughtful look at American history by an outsider who knows us very well indeed.

The Indianapolis Star
Extremely well-told, with a verve and self-confidence that are most appealing.

The Boston Globe
Handled with finesse; one gets from Walker a lucid vision.

Makers of the American Century

The Independent on Sunday
Throughout, the range and depth of the coverage – its sheer quality of understanding – can be quite astonishing…A wonderful book.

Literary Review
Marvellous…information-packed, entertaining and moving.

The Times of London
Elegantly drawn and judiciously selected, an engrossing display of the American character – the result of meticulous research and lucid prose.

The Cold War, A History
  • A New York Times notable book
  • Shortlisted for Britain’s Book of the Year prize

The Washington Post
A compact, provocative and elegantly wrought history of the formative political event of our era by a world-class scholar-journalist.

The New York Times
With lively prose and well-chosen anecdotes, Walker deftly traverses a half-century of fascinating material – Enormously successful as a one-volume narrative.

The Los Angeles Times
This marvelously readable and intellectually engaging survey sees not only the trees and the forest but the entire landscape as well.

The European
It reads like a thriller with a warm heart, a gripping chronicle of the second half of our century to be enjoyed well into the future.

The Times of London
Eminently readable…Walker tells an exciting story well, combining his journalistic skills with extensive research.

Walter Russell Mead, Council on Foreign Relations
Martin Walker’s The Cold War is a major achievement and will stand as an important contribution to our understanding of this controversial subject. Combing brilliant scholarship with first-hand knowledge based on his experience as one of the premier journalists of the Cold War, Walker has written a book with something for everyone: new revelations and controversial speculations for the specialist; a clear overview of the origins and course of the Cold war for students and the general reader, and thoughtful reflections for policy-makers. This is required reading for anyone who wants or needs to understand the new foreign policy challenges.

The Waking Giant: Gorbachev and Perestroika

The London Review of Books
Walker has written the most original and thought-provoking book on contemporary Soviet society and politics to have appeared for a decade…should be required reading for any politician, diplomat, journalist, businessman or ordinary citizen.

Tribune
This book gives readers a clearer insight into what is happening in Russia than any other I have seen….Walker is reliable, prolific and intensely interesting.
