The US book tour

27/2/2014

I am currently on my US book tour, and just flew back from sunny Phoenix, Arizona, to find it snowing in Washington DC. Again.

The Poisoned Pen bookstore in Arizona is one of my favourites, and its founder and owner Barbara Peters is a legendary figure and a dear friend. After my presentation, when I was introduced by the terrific Alaska-based mystery writer Dana Stabenow, we went out to dine in the open air at a great restaurant called Bink’s, whose chef is on the short list for this year’s James Beard award.

We had a great crowd of Bruno fans at the bookstore, many of whom had bought the UK editions of the books (since they come out months before the US edition). One fan brought me a copy of the UK edition of The Resistance Man which I’d already signed in London, but now I was able to add a personal note.

I'm looking forward to a month on the Lot this summer and stumbled on your books...I have just one left.

Have just finished The Resistance Man, as marvellous as ever, but could Bruno find a partner soon, otherwise he will be too old. Favourite mystery series along with A McCall-Smith's Isabel Dalhousie. Love all the rural, culinary and domestic details, as well as the fascinating historical background.
Thanks

I agree with Chris's comments above. I have some questions about the train robbery that perhaps you can answer. I did find a website about it which answered one of my questions (why was the money moving through this region).
1. Why was the money being kept in Périgueux. Seems like an out of the way spot.
2. Whose money was it?
3. Why would the Germany Navy want so much French money?
Thanks,
Gary

Here are the short answers to your questions...

1. The money had been moved to Perigueux because it was thought to be safe from RAF bombing, unlike Bordeaux, whose airport, port and submarine pens were regular bombing targets.

2. It belonged to the Banque de France

3. The two most plausible reasons, according to the conclusion of French parliamentary inquiry in 1950, was either to send the cash to Germany by submarine (since the rail network in northern France was in chaos after the bombing during the D-Day campaign) OR to sent it by submarine to Argentina to fund a post-Nazi state.

Sadly, I missed your Poisoned Pen appearance because I was at an investigative journalism conference in Baltomore that weekend. Having discovered and enjoyed the Perigord last year thanks to Bruno, my wife and I will be staying in Les Eyzies-de-Tayac for two months until mid-June. I would be delighted if we run into you around there.

I shall be in the Dordogne for most of the summer, book tours aside.

I hope you enjoy the region! If you're around for the Tour de France, I shall be doing an event at Chateau Monbazillac on 25 July.

I am utterly charmed by Bruno, the Perigord, and all the history and gastronomic delights in this series. I have just finished the most recent and cannot wait for the next.

The Bruno books demand instant gratification. I just read Children of War which I had sent from the UK since it won't be published in the US for another year.

Any interest in selling your copy to me?

I'm sorry about that - the publication schedules all depend on how quickly each territory picked up the rights to the series, and the US was a comparatively late adopter.
