The (German) cookbook has landed!

The Bruno cookbook came out at the end of September, and by the time the Frankfurt book fair was over on October 9 it was number one on the Focus best-seller list for lifestyle books and had gone into its third printing. 

It is not a conventional cookbook, not a product of stylists and studios whose glossy photos could never be produced by anyone cooking at home. 

Every photo of food in this book was taken as the dish came out of our family kitchen in our house in Perigord.

The book is organised around the people who produce it, the gardeners and farmers, the hunters and fishermen, the cheese-makers and bakers, the wine-makers and  the foragers in the woods for truffles and wild herbs and mushrooms. And it comes with Bruno's cooking tips, with new short stories about Bruno and his friends and neighbours in St Denis.

Usually a writer works alone, but this time I was part of a team with Klaus Einwanger the brilliant photographer, with Kobi the book designer and with my glorious wife Julia, whose idea it was in the first place. And we are all very proud of it.

I could not find an e-mail for you so I am piggy-backing on this correspondence in the hopes of reaching you.

Are there any plans to have the Bruno series translated into French? I am a very bilingual Québecoise. Unfortunately many of my friends do not master English well enough to enjoy reading books in that language. I suspect the market of people from France wanting to read books about the Perigord written by an American might be limited. But I wanted to ask because I know many Québcois-e would love them.

It's the same in the UK - every TV show seems to be about food, yet people watch them while eating takeaway or microwave meals...

Sadly there's no news about the English cookbook yet, as the image rights issue is proving hard to rectify.

Hier ist ein klein film under den Bruno Kochbuch von den Deutsche Verlag Diogenes, mit Martin Walkers Wohunng, mit sein Doef in Perigord, sein Hund, Benson, und sein Hahn, Sarko.

Wer ist den hierfür verantwortlich? Ein ordentlicher Text wäre für 5 Dollar z.B. bei "fiverr" zu bekommen.

Hello there - I heard about your book on the radio today and have been looking for it in English this evening - I am curious that you being a Scotsman and presumably not a fluent German speaker (?) the book would come out in German before it comes out in English - kept thinking I'd given the search term in wrong. Is the original book the German one in that case? Can do either but would have preferred an English version really. Thanks for commenting Polly

That's because it was the German publisher's idea! We will be doing an English version, but the German one is the original (and currently only).

I'm translating a text about your cookbook from German into English. Will the English title be the same as in German, i.e. Bruno's cookbook? Have looked on Amazon but there's no reference to your book. Thanks for your help - I wouldn't want to mislead anyone into purchasing the wrong book by providing an incorrect title.

Stayed up until 3:00 a.m. reading Children of War and even the author's notes, that is how intrigued I was with the story! I have read every book and had just gone to Amazon to check an see if the title was available. Desolé, it was not, but I have to say, my best friend and I read those scenes with Bruno cooking totally enthralled! While I have collected and tried several of the recipes on the site, having the cookbook will thoroughly enhance my Martin Walker collection!

Love the books, looking forward to the cookery book too. Looks as though you are starting a trend! I am going to the Oundle Literary Festival later this month to a talk by the author of a new detective series ( The Richebourg Affair) strongly featuring the wines of Burgundy complete with wine tasting! A cunning plan, methinks to make us buy the book. Perhaps Oundle could be on your schedule another year?

I have so enjoyed all your Bruno books and have just finished reading "The Children Return". It was at the end of reading the book that I read about the upcoming Cook Book. I hope it comes out soon in English.

After nearly 20 years in the Perigord I believe I can almost claim to have local knowledge. In other rural communities it would be generations before I could make such a claim!

Still awaiting the english version of the Chief Bruno cookbook. On another note, I was very disappointed that "Children of War" was released under the new title "The Children Return". How did this happen? Since I had preordered the new book details were not available at the time.

I'm very sorry about that - is there no way you can return it? I'm trying to fight this by highlighting the double titles on the Reviews section of this website, but I'm afraid the US publishers have a tendency to change the original titles.

Have read the CAVES OF PÉRIGORD at least 3 times [ has this been translated into French?] - absolutely brilliant and I think a "must read" as part of the Bruno series.
Also looking forward to the cookbook - like everybody else.

I love your books. I always feel very cheerful after reading one of Bruno's adventures. I just can't understand why the English cookbook is taking so long. Who do I need to contact to encourage a little action? I have been looking at this discussion for news for years. Please let your fans know what we can do to help. Don't they know that Bruno's example of healthy living inspires us all!!???

I'm afraid the problem is all legal, as such things often are.

The Swiss-German publishers were the ones who decided to press ahead with doing a cookbook, while my English-language publishers were unconvinced that there would be enough interest in my book in what is a very crowded market.

So I wrote the book in English (and with my wife Julia, whose talents in the kitchen far outstrip my own), and we worked with Diogenes to produce the book. As far as production costs go, the most expensive part of a cookbook is the photography - you have to have a professional who's able to show the food off in its best possible light, which is far harder than Instagram filters make it look!

Diogenes commissioned and paid for the photographs, and neither of my English language publishers is willing to either pay Diogenes for the right to use those images, nor are they willing to pay for their own set of photos to be taken. On their eyes, there simply isn't the market for it, despite the endless screenshots of comments on this site that we send them showing how many of you are asking for copies.

So we've been talking to Diogenes about them putting out an English language version which we can then do direct sales through this site and/or the likes of Amazon, as Diogenes don't have the EngLang bookseller connections that my UK and US publishers have when it comes to getting books on shelves.

Another option is that we produce the English language text of the book and insert printed EngLang pamphlets to despatch with EngLang orders of the book in German. It's not the prettiest solution, but it does give people a chance to cook from the recipes themselves.

As you can see, it's not been easy even though we are doing what we can to get something out...

Sadly not! Benson is now rather elderly, but when he was a puppy he was far too impish to be trusted around truffles. Or slippers, his own toys, cardboard boxes... There was nothing he wouldn't shred to bits within minutes.

Are the recipes in the German cookbook (which has pictures) the same ones on your website? I cannot read German but your publishers inability to recognize there is a market for this book (Julia Child had a similar problem) with enough support to have new pictures taken is discouraging. Maybe those of us who want the book buy from Amazon and take the translations from your website?

Certainly easier than going through each mouthwatering book and taking notes from the text.

Sadly not - all of the recipes in the book were developed and tested for the book, so there's no crossover. But the recipes on the website are almost all traditional Perigordain recipes well worth eating!

We're still working on getting an English version out, but it continues to be an uphill battle, I'm afraid.

Love Tremolat and the entire region! We spent two weeks in a lovely restored barn "Le Chabrol". Reading your books transports me back. We had a wonderful dinner at Michel and Sylvie's small and intimate restaurant in L'Assette Gourmonde. Sylie cooks and Michel is host. The menu is what it is, but there is always fresh foie gras with Monbazillac. If they are still cooking, it deserves an honorable mention in your next Bruno book. Had another great dinner in Paunat at Chez Juliens'. And I'm anxiously awaiting your English version of the cookbook. Keep writing, cooking and drinking fine wines! Cheers...

I must go back but lately for ferme-auberge food I have been going to Yannick Goff's place, Les Truffieres, in the hills above Tremolat. And on your next visit, you should try Garden Party at the top of Limeuil by the entrance to the castle gardens.

I just want to add my endorsement of Darcie's comment: I think an English version of your cookbook would fly off the shelves. I know I'm eagerly awaiting the opportunity of having it in my collection. Is it still being developed? I sure hope you've not given up on it.

I love the characters, milieu and scenarios you've developed in your Bruno series. Each new book is like a surprise visit with old friends. I hope you never stop writing them! Thank you for so very many hours of entertainment and escape to the south of France.
