Moseying around the Moselle

On this year's German book tour, and learned in Speyer that my new novel, The Resistance Man (Reiner Wein in German) has gone straight into the Der Spiegel best seller list at number 2.

For my reading at the Osiander bookshop they kindly served a lovely Bergerac red wine from Ch Vieux Touron. It went down well after a litre of homemade red beer at the Domhof brewery, with Bratwurst, sauerkraut and black bread, eaten in the shadow of the splendid 11th century cathedral of red and white stone.

Then we had a great reading in Freiburg, one of my favourite German towns, and last night was in the Moselle Valley, in the picturesque medieval town of Cochem, where we had an audience of 200 people in the old Capuchin monastery. My friend Brigitte Geibel, of Weindepot Geibel, had brought in lots of Bergerac wine from Ch Tourmentine to go with the roast duck and figs that we ate. And before that, we had shared a wonderful bottle of Collet champagne at her wine store to go with the chicken soup she had made to keep me fortified.

Next stop is a reading in a cinema at Bad Sodem, near Frankfurt, and then the Imperial Riding School in Vienna. .

Not a comment regarding the Moselle, just a note to say how very much I enjoy your books. Am in the midst of Resistance Man, and have just refined my Bruno's Aguilletes recipe with hints from the book. I've made it in our Aix home before... and I'm sure it will be even better next time! I was also happy to find your Perfect Perigord Week... your suggestions brought back wonderful memories of the area, and will be well-used as we're planning a Music and Markets Tour for our National Gallery friends next September. We'll be in the area in early June after our upcoming Venice/Veneto tour to reaacquaint ourselves with all of its delights. Thanks much for your wonderful books and recipes!

It's my pleasure! I hope you enjoy the September tour - it's a glorious time in the Perigord, and quieter than the chaos of summer.

If you're lucky with timing, you may even be able to catch the last of the night markets.

Just want to say how very much I have enjoyed reading all the Bruno novels ... one right after the other because I always wanted to hear more about him, his friends, his lovely St. Denis, all of which seems so real. I have read few books that have such a sense of authenticity and your style is so natural, unrushed, like visiting with a good friend and catching up on the news. It all seems so real and I've loved every moment of being immersed in Bruno's world. I'm sad about Isabelle; I'd hoped she might have a child he could raise so I'd anticipated but not correctly.

I dearly hope you will keep writing these novels. Bruno has an abundance of common sense and compassion. Would that more of us could be like him. Thank you for giving us treasures that not only entertain but that teach, about people and about good food and good wine.

What wonderful comments! That is truly high praise, so thank you very much.

I have no plans to stop writing the Bruno novels - they're my love letter to a region and its inhabitants that have brought me so much joy. Bruno is now as much a member of my family as my wife, dog, and children.

Another comment, again not about Moselle, but to compliment you on the world of Bruno. I've only recently discovered Bruno and the characters of his village but already feel I know them all well.

We live locally to 'St Denis' and have staying in our gite at the moment a most delightful couple from Germany. On talking to them I have discovered they are avid fans and have booked their holiday to explore Brunos Dordogne. On the off chance, are you making any public appearances in the next couple of weeks in the Dordogne?

Sorry for the late reply; I have been in America in recent weeks, and am off to Frankfurt to launch the Bruno cookbook at their eponymous book fair - it's a terrible time of year to leave the Perigord when it's looking so glorious, but needs must!
