Lascaux IV

Martin at the Lascaux IV exhibition.
Just had a wonderful tour of the spiffing and high-tech new Lascaux IV museum, guided by director Guillaume Colombo.

The new copy of the cave is brilliant, much larger and with more of the save than the old Lascaux II and the virtual reality ride is a thrill. The use of new technology to reveal the intricate engravings between and among the 17,000 year-old cave paintings is a revelation. I just got my invitation from President Francois Hollande to join him Saturday for his formal opening of this spectacular new building.

I've been wanting to visit Lascaux for years but never get around to it. Sounds like something to do this winter. Thanks for the news. Enjoy your visit with Mr Hollande.

I'm sure you'll be blown away - on my first visit to Lascaux II I had to force myself to remember it was a replica.

Visited Lascaux at New Year after seeing it on your site - wonderful. Are you planning any book tours in the UK in the near future please Martin? Is it possible that Bruno's investigations might take him skiing to Mont Dore / SuperBesse? MM

I'll be at the Harrogate crime festival July 22, with a new Bruno novel, 'The Templars' Last Secret.'

I don't know this ski area in the Massif Central. Maybe I should.

See you there! I will then wax lyrical about Mont Dore. My heart is in Correze and it is our nearest slope. A l'ete.

Dear Martin!
I never had much contact to France and never wanted to... Sometimes it's still strange between Germans and French... But your Bruno-novels changed everything. Now I can't wait to explore the Dordogne...
I had not so funny experiences in France when we travelled through the country and had to stop for eating, sleeping... What is your experience in France if you cannot speak french... Or have you always been able to speak french???

I learned French at school, but as is often the case with school languages I was able to ask for directions and food, but couldn't really understand the replies given. But in my 20s I fell in love with the country through its music and its women, and my ability to speak French improved rapidly.

It's certainly an easier country to navigate if you do speak the language, but there is an awful lot of goodwill in the Perigord for people who try. My daughter once brought over a boyfriend whose French was limited to "please" and "thank you", but he was welcomed with open arms for his attempts to use (and improve) his limited skills.

A smartphone with Google Translate is always useful, as no matter how good your mastery of a language there are always occasional issues - my daughter often recounts the story of asking for a pistol (fusil) in the hardware store when she wanted to replace a fuse (fusible)...

Like every country, France is a complicated place with highlights and lowlights. But in my little corner of the southwest I've found a warm and welcoming community in a stunning natural landscape with some of the best food and wine in the world - the real Dordogne is definitely worth a visit.

Hi Martin,
First, thanks for Bruno. He's one of the great characters in modern literature and I look forward to each installment. Second, I wanted to call your attention to a couple of typos on your Amazon author page (sorry, as an erstwhile editor I can't help myself):
"...former soldier who was wounded while serving it UN peacekeepers during the siege of Sarajevo. Bruno hunts, cooks, tries never to arrest anyone and, hates to carry his gun (but sometimes must. He loves his basset hound, his horse..." It should read "...while serving with..." and the parenthesis needs closure.

Thanks for letting me know. I don't know how to go about getting it changed, but I've asked my publishers to help.
