Creatures of the night

The marche nocturne season in the Perigord opened last night at the lovely 14th century bastide town of Beaumont.

From 6 pm the old town square was filled with tables and benches and all around were kiosks selling grilled meats and sausages, salads and foie gras, cheese and strawberries, roasted legs and hocks of pork, barbecues of shrimp and ribs, ratatouille and fries.

This year, something new: chicken fajitas, Tex-Mex style.

The wine stall sold bottles from the terrific Domaine de l'Ancienne Cure for a mere 7 euros and there was a live jazz-blues band. Five of us ate and drank very well and enjoyed a grand evening for about 15 euros a head.

One can do this every day of the week and never need pay restaurant prices all summer. Mondays in Beaumont, Tuesdays in Eymet or Le Bugue, Wednesdays in Perigueux, Thursdays in St Cyprien, Fridays in Sarlat or le Buisson, Saturdays in Audrix and Sundas in Monbazillac or Limeuil.

It's a long drive home from Eymet to Le Bugue after a few glasses of wine. Looking forward to reading your new book, but why haven't you mentioned it on your blog ??

That's the beauty of a close-knit community - we take it in turns to be the designated driver after wonderful nights out sampling the best the Dordogne has to offer.

I've been working on the newest Bruno for several months now, and there has been the odd mention on here, but I'm loath to discuss it too much lest I give anything away! A book in development can be very different to the finished result, as the characters often take the plot down unexpected avenues.

We're coming to the area in mid-September. Any chance this continues until then?? We cannot wait to tour Bruno's area of France.

Sadly the bulk of the night markets wind down at the end of August, but if you check this site before you leave you may well be in luck:

We are envious, Martin! But Tex-Mex in the Périgord? Inouï !

I felt their initiative needed a show of support! And at least they kept it simple - no fusion foie gras burritos in sight, thank goodness.

Not only in the part of the Dordogne that you mention. In the tiny commune of Bouzic the night market each Tuesday evening through July and August is a wonderful place to meet our neighbours and to eat local produce in a country setting. Come and be welcome! Its close to Castelnaud and to Domme for an afternoon and is a very quiet and peaceful finish to the day.

I've been to the Bouzic night market - I have very fond memories of an evening there with my daughter after a day spent at the Warfare and Weaponry Museum in Castlenaud, which she maintains is her favourite museum in the world.

Bouzic is a lovely part of the Dordogne, isn't it?
