Bruno titles update and apology

Please note that the Bruno novel The Dying Season is the title chosen by the UK publishers for the novel published in the USA and Canada as The Patriarch.

I fear this has caused some confusion for readers and I regret this greatly. This was a decision by the publishers and not by me - my title all along was The Patriarch.

And now I learn that the UK publishers are to re-issue the first book in the series, originally Bruno, Chief of Police, under the new title Death in the Dordogne.

Again, this is a decision of the publishers, not the author, and I am very sorry for any confusion this might cause.

Any word on the English version of the Bruno Cookbook?

I'm trying to maintain an up-to-date list of both titles (where applicable) in the headers of the reviews section of this site, so that people can easily see where two have been used - I hate the confusion as much as any reader!

We're still working on the English language version, I'm afraid.

Martin, your Bruno books are my number one go to books when I feel like visiting friends. As such, I'm constantly telling my friends about your books which I love to do. That being said, the conversations become cumbersome when tripping over the various titles. Your publishers have done you a disservice. Imagine my friend saying "Oh, I just read The Dying Season and loved it!" and I respond "I thought I'd read all his books! I just read The Patriarch and enjoyed it so, I need to go look for this new book. I thought the next one is to come out next summer." And so on. A waste of time when we could have been talking about Bruno's latest adventure!

It is INFURIATING as a reader, I know! And I'm very sorry about it. I never intend to have different titles for the same book, so I'm doing my best to maintain clarity by ensuring that both titles are clearly indicated (where applicable!) on this website. If you're ever unsure, under the 'Reviews' section I've listed both versions of each title. I know it's a pain to check, but keeping an up-to-date record of title dupes is my attempt to maintain clarity for all of you (and sometimes for me!).

I have been trying to find a copy of the Bruno cookbook in English, but all I can find is the German edition. How can I get a copy? I just discovered the Bruno series and am 'devouring' it :) Thanks!

I'm afraid you've hit upon a controversial topic! Due to rights issues, the cookbook is currently only available in German. We're trying to get it out in English, but it's an ongoing process...

A fair assumption! We wrote the book in English, so once the image rights are resolved it should be a fairly quick process to produce.

Just visiting for a few days and I see life is imitating art in 'St Denis'... a tragic murder, two town houses burnt down in suspicious circumstances, an outbreak of bird flu in local geese farms - all in the space of a few weeks. I'd say you have the basis for another Bruno novel.

Just finished "The crowded Grave" What a pleasure to read a book that truly represents life in rural France. I'm somewhat to the east of you in a small village - Vallabrègues - on the banks of the Rhône,which you will not have heard of, unless you are a basketmaker. We moved here in 1996, a superannuated theatre sister & a redundant steel-works crane driver. As I read I'm reminded of all that goes on in my own village, the intrigues, the little dramas, the characters - like Papé Bacot just celebrating his 106th birthday & warned by his son not to blow out the candles as he slobbers & would make the cake inedible,
the black humour of the night when my house burnt down (really), the machinations of the Comité des Fêtes (I'm a member). Your method of cooking the foie gras poeléé is like my own. You strike me as a "mec très sympa". If you would be interested in any of the doings of the village or of the Port of Beaucaire with it's expats living on boats please get in touch. It will surprise you!! I love it here & will never move.

I am a new fan of the Bruno series (reading the 2nd book). I am trying to compile a list of the titles and have found two titles on the internet - "A Market Tale" and "Bruno and the Carol Singers" that are not listed under the reviews section of your site. Are these a part of the Bruno Series? Thanks, in advance. I love the stories.

They're both short stories I've written that are linked to the Bruno books, but designed to be accessible as stand-alones for anyone not familiar with the series who might stumble across them. I should add them to the list on the site - thanks for the suggestion!

Love, love, love Bruno chief of police! Love your writing style it's almost mathematical but with the perfect touch of natural. It's really too bad about the violent titles, there's no need for that! I wish industry would become more civilized!

There's just so much in the market these days that one has to stand out from the crowd. My working titles are often very different to the published version - my last, for example, I called 'The Lost Bugatti', but it was published as 'Fatal Pursuit'.

As someone from Canada, I would be very interested to hear from >the publishers< their rationale for the different titles for the different continents. Is it for translation, or something to do with our different histories, or ....? Just for cultural sake!

I've always assumed it was to tailor books to markets, but I shall have to ask my publishers and see if there's a fuller explanation.

Dear Martin, compliments on your great novels. Would like to make a small comment on the Haunted Season, that I have enjoyed so much.
I am Russian who lives in France, and whose father was very close to Nomenclatura. The Russian story line is very good and I see that you have read a lot on the subject. However, there is a small mistake - there is not such thing is Siberian accent. In fact there are no distinctive and easily recognizable regional accents among ethnic Russians, except for the southern Russian accent (area of Krasnodar and Rostov-on-Don), that sounds a lot like Ukranian in intonation. All other accents come from non ethnic Russian - Georgians, Chechens, Belorussians, Ukrainians, etc.

Thanks for the tip! I thought I heard an accent when I was in Siberia years ago, but that was in my early days of learning Russian and can probably be attributed to my untrained ear.

I am a big fan of the Bruno mysteries. My local library does not have all of your books. Can you provide me with a list in chronological order of the Bruno titles? I want to ask the library to order the ones it does not currently have. Thanks very much.
