A day among the vines

This week I visited Sean and Caro Feely at their vineyard in Saussignac, which is in the process of being renamed Chateau feely (it used to be Chateau Hair Garrigue).

It is not easy to find from the map offered by the Maison de Vin, but worth the effort. Take the D14 road from Bergerac to Ste Foy la Grande and take a left on the D4 to Saussignac, and after 400 metres there is a sign on the left for Chateau Haut Garrigue.

They have a spectacular view over the Dordogne valley, and after visiting the vineyards and hearing Sean explain the bio-organic methods they use to keep the terroir healthy, we sat in the open air to taste their various wines.

I was accompanied by my friend and neighbour Raymond, a retired officer of gendarmes and a great lover of wine. We came away with three cases, one of their wines called Sincerite, all Sauvignon Blanc, for me, and a case each of their 2007 Haut Garrigue reds which they are re-naming Resonance.

A little earlier, I visited my old friend Francis-Xavier at Chateau de Tiregand, accompanied by my new friend Klaus Einwanger, who has been taking the photos for the forthcoming Bruno cookbook. (You can find examples of his prize-winning work on www.foodfactory.de).

In the cellars, we tasted the 2011, which is about to go into barrels and which promises to be a splendid wine. And he kindly gave me a rare bottle of the 2001 which I served at a small dinner for Raymond and the baron.

We began with smoked trout from the Isle of Mull in Scotland, which we drank with a bottle of Monthuys champagne. With the Tiregand I prepared one of my favourite dishes, aiguilettes de canard au miel et aux grains de moutarde, to which I added a splash of Armagnac, and accompanied it with potatoes from the garden.

The wine was magnificent, smooth and gentle at first and then its strength slowly became more apparent. We drank it in something close to reverence.

I guess I shouldn't be too suprised that you and Bruno seem to have very similar tastes and hobbies! I too live near vineyards. (Vienna is the only European capital that has extensive vineyards within the city limits.) I was pleasantly surprised to see Bruno give a favorable nod to Wiener Schnitzel and Gruener Veltliner in "The Resistance Man". Some quick questions: Will the cookbook be out in time for Christmas? I confess that I'm interested to see how a fictional detective will be integrated into a cookbook of all things. Next question: Is there another Bruno novel in development? If so, can you throw us any teasers about it? And finally: How are the Bourdeaux/Perigord grape harvests looking this year? When do they start picking? Thanks again and all the best.

I am very fond of Gruener Veltliner and Wiener Schnitzel as a wonderful combination and I head for Figlmueller whenever I am in Vienna, which I shall be for KrimiNacht, September 17.

I am working on a new Bruno novel, the 7th, which will be published in UK next year.

The cookbook will be launched next September at Frankfurt BuchMesse. It contains a new Bruno short story, set in the market, and it contains nearly 70 recipes of Perigord food, including some of Bruno’s own variations, like Quiche Perigourdine, Boeuf Perigourdin and lots of Bruno’s cooker and household tips.

What a nice surprise. I'll try to make it to Kriminacht. Our General Conference starts on the 16th, so we shall see. I may have to let work get in the way of my interests. That German book tour of yours involves a lot of travel/engagements.

Martin – You should be listed with the French Travel Bureau as a favorite agent. After reading the first five books in the Bruno series, my wife and traveling companions (4) were extremely interested in your “Perfect Week in Perigord. I am not sure this blog is the right forum to ask questions so will refrain in doing so at this time but I would certainly like the opportunity to take advantage of your expertise.
Our group spent three weeks in France last June & July (Provence & then Normandy) and are scheduled to take an Elbe River Cruise next June. After reading your Bruno novels we are now exploring the idea of a week on Perigord sometime in early June before moving on to Prague.

I'm afraid I'm currently doing a book tour around Europe, which means I have limited internet access, but I've done a lot of work with http://www.dordogne-perigord-tourisme.fr/, who are an excellent resource.

Hello Martin,

We have recently cycled through Bergerac and the Dordogne, 28 September- 12 October , and enjoyed a visit to and tour at Ch. Tiregard.
François is a lovely man and we are completed enamoured with his wines and story.
We shared some nice stories with him and about you too.
I have read all your Bruno books and many friends here in NZ are now also big fans.
Looking forward to the next novel.

Best regards, Lindsay.
